Around the globe, wedding traditions range from romantic to confusing to utterly strange. Weddings may be celebrated all over the world, but not all cultures celebrate in the same way. What seems “normal” in North America - tossing the bouquet, cutting the cake, the first dance - might seem unusual to people on the other side of the pond. And what they’re accustomed to on their wedding day may make our jaws drop.
In Scotland, the way guests show affection to the bride on her wedding day is by covering her with everything gross you can think of. Tar, mud, sauces, curdled milk - they all make the list! Since it’s customary for brides to get all dolled up in North America, that tradition just seems wrong! And how about in the Yugur culture of China where the groom shoots the bride with bow and arrows (minus the arrowheads) and then breaks the arrow for good luck. It seems a little silly and really confusing, but who are we to judge.
All that really matters is that the newlyweds are happy. And what seems completely strange to one culture, is totally normal to another. That’s what makes our world so interesting!
